What I Learned from the Last Meal My Mother Ever Cooked for Me
It is Easter. Today I have decided to try my hand at my hero Julia Child’s beef bourguignonne. This is the same classic recipe that my mother made, and it’s the only classic Julia dish I make that she also made. Nowadays, I rarely cook beef bourguignonne more than once a year because it makes me so sad that, when it’s done, I can barely bring myself to take a bite.
During my freshman year in college, my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors made misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis, and in the meantime, my mother each night would wash down a few aspirin with a cold beer to calm her splitting headaches. Finally, the doctors gave her six months to live. She made it to three.
One day in March, my father called me home uncharacteristically on a Sunday for my birthday dinner. I was young and naive, happy because going home meant presents and my favorite fancy dinner ; steak and a smothered baked potato.
I didn’t get steak that night. Instead I had to eat the all too familiar beef bourguignonne. My mother died shortly thereafter. In fact, it was the last meal that my mother ever made for me. And for a while, I was angry. At first, I believed it was because when I expected steak for my birthday, my mom didn’t listen to my request as usual. Then I realized that I was angry because she abandoned me and left me at such a young age. It was so unfair.
Now I am older than she was when she passed away, and I have a daughter who is older than I was on the day I ate that last meal. I can only imagine the sheer terror that she must have felt when she thought about leaving me in this world alone to fend for myself.
I’m no longer angry about that last meal. Now I admire her courage for standing over a hot stove in her last days here on earth to cook something that she enjoyed.
